Distraction Burglaries and Scams

Over the past several weeks, the Pennsylvania State Police have received information about possible distraction burglaries and thefts occurring throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

Suspects posing as legitimate workers approach elderly homeowners at their residences with the intent of gaining entry under a seemingly legitimate ruse.  The real purpose is to divert the homeowner while accomplices search for currency and jewelry.

Some of the more frequently used ploys, by the suspects, are claims to be from the local electric company, water department, cable company, roofing, paving, driveway seal-coating, or other building trade workers, city inspectors, surveyors, tree trimmers, or government personnel from a Social Service Agency.

In some instances, women and children accompany male suspects and participate in the diversion of the homeowner.

The suspects may offer a rebate by giving the victim a $100 bill with a request for change. This allows the suspect(s) to determine where the victim keeps currency in the house.  The victim is distracted either inside the house, i.e. turning a light switch on and off, knocking on water pipes, etc.; or outside, i.e. to show the victim damage outside of the home, areas needing repair, determining property lines, etc.

Once the victim is distracted, the unseen suspects enter the home and remove currency and jewelry. In some cases, the suspects have gone as far as to remove safes from the homes.

If someone shows up at your door unannounced claiming to be a utility worker, call your utility company and ask a rep if someone has been scheduled to show up at the house.

Or simply dial 9-1-1 and explain to the communications officer what is occurring.

AMBULANCE MEMBERSHPS:  AN INVESTMENT IN YOUR SAFETY

The Upper Hanover Township Board of Supervisors encourages all residents to purchase annual memberships in the Upper Perkiomen Valley Ambulance Association.  Your individual or family membership will help cover expenses in the event that you need emergency medical services or transportation to the hospital.

A membership protects you from incurring expenses that your insurance doesn’t pay.  For example, if your insurance coverage sets a minimum or maximum for ambulance/paramedic services, your membership in the Ambulance Association would cover services not paid by the insurance company.  If your insurance company does not cover ambulance/paramedic services, then your membership would cover those expenses (within guidelines).

For more information, call UPVAA at 215-679-5989.

FIRE COMPANIES SEEK VOLUNTEERS

Four volunteer fire companies – the East Greenville Fire Company, the Pennsburg Fire Company, the Red Hill Fire Company and the Goodwill Fire Company – protect people and property in Upper Hanover Township.

If the Township had to foot the bill for providing paid fire protection services, taxes would increase astronomically.  As it is, the .2-mill tax for providing equipment to the fire companies represents just a fraction of what the departments need to operate.

This is where you come in.  While the departments need trained firefighters, they also need volunteers on other areas as well.  You can help in a variety of ways that do not include fighting fires.

For more information call the individual stations to see how you can help:  East Greenville (215-679-5342); Pennsburg (215-679-8293); Red Hill (215-679-8051); and Goodwill (610-845-2501).
